I am a college student and have been paying rent for the last four years. The tax return for this year has me getting less rent back than last year even though I paid more rent this year. How is this possible? I have all the Certificates of Rent paid and I see that they are all multiplied by 19% to come up with a number. Should I not get that much rent back? Seems a bit strange. Can someone help me out?

Should I mention this to the landlord?
Should my boyfriend be present at the apartment inspection and lease-signing? Or should he be away to avoid questions? I think I may have mentioned this possibility to the landlord before, but I don’t remember.

She does not live here anymore, nor is she in the area. The gas company won’t let us put a new gas bill in another name without lease in our names. The landlord is not very accessible and is on an extended vacation so we have no way to get a new lease anytime soon. I’m tired of taking cold showers.
