Hi, this question refers to rental agreements in Paris, France.

I know a little about what’s asked by French estate agents when renting a property in France and I’m aware that as a general rule they ask the tenant to prove that they earn over 3 times the amount of the rental price. What I’d like to know is “would it be possible for me to combine my salary with that of my girlfriend in order to rent a better place than what is available to me at 1/3 of my salary?”

I want to know if the decision to rent a place to someone is governed by law in this respect or whether the “3 times more than the monthly rent” rule is just a guideline that can be adapted in accordance with the combined financial situation of the prospective tennants.

Any help would be much appreciated – bear in mind that this question is directed mainly at either French people or people with experience living there as an ex pat.
That’s a useless answer. I posted this question elsewhere on Yahoo! answers and have received 13 very informative answers so far which have given me a great deal of hope and motivation in my search for a French rental agreement that is adaptable to my needs. I think you are underestimating the WORLD part of WWW and for that alone I won’t be giving you the best answer – your answer is a waste of space and shows a distinct lack of intelligence, not to mention a dire command of the English language.

My girlfriend and I are getting an apartment together. She failed her credit application and thus has to go on the lease as an occupant. I passed my check with flying colors and such we are getting the apartment.
I would like to safeguard myself should something go sour in the relationship. Is there anythign I can do so as to protect myself? I have the money to cover the rent should someting go wrong but I would like to avoid that with a lease type document.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

She is also put on the lease, but it is in my name. She also put her sister as the dependent which is probably why we got the apartment. We fight and you know how it goes, I want to either turn the apartment over to her and leave or keep it and leave her on the lease. Is this possible? What should I do?
