“caretakers” will generally take care of cleaning halls and sidewalks – general building clean up and get either reduced rent or free rent
“Managers” are the on site person you see if you rent and you need somethnig fixed or pay your rent – they generally get free rent
depends on whether or not you want an outside job (which you could do in conjunction with a caretaker position) or you want to be home all the time (like a manager)
Every company operates differantly so you’d have to call a few places to see what they have set up for compensation
good luck

  1. 65% water says:

If you are a caretaker or manager, an apartment is usually included as part of the payment. You do have a lot of duties and it won’t be a 40-hour-a-week job. You should also think about the fact that if you lose your job you lose your apartment, and if the apartment doesn’t work out it’s too bad because you can’t move and keep your job.

buy a 3-4 unit building and live in one of the units – the other rents should pay most if not all your housing costs and maybe even make some positive cash flow

“Landlords” are usually people who own a property, so they are not living rent free. Apartment manager’s may receive free rent or rent discount, but they don’t necessarily live “rent free”. It depends on numerous factors such as the housing market, size of the property, and the industry standard.

In my area, rentals are very competitive. On-site managers for large properties receive a rent discount in addition to some pay — but they still have to pay rent.

To get your foot-in-the-door, apply to property management company. Also, the National Apartment Association does have a certification program for leasing professionals.
