How do I break a lease at a college apartment before the lease starts?

I signed a lease for August and it’s February now. I decided to live at another place instead and was wondering if i could break the lease without being held accountable for the entire 1 year amount. I am a college student so I do not know much about this stuff. I had a 325$ security deposit. I called them and I said my only option was to find someone to live there for me like a sublet kind of thing.

wow. this is going to be a valuable lesson for you. not many people would put $325 down 6 months in advance.

you owe for entire year. you cannot back out. you need to find a sublease tenant to take your place,

it will be cheaper to stay there.

never never never sign a lease that far in advance.

oh-no.you sign the lease so you are responsible for the lease.you may be able to get away from paying the entire year but you probably wont get your deposit.best thing to do is to communicate with leasing company.if you are held accountable for the entire lease…i would consider reasons to stay there and not move just because you found a different place.you are too young to get into a finnancial bind.you will be ok!!!

you can pay the re-letting fee to get out of the lease.

Read your lease first.. learn your options if any, because, despite the phrasing of your question, the lease HAS started.

    Especially find out about sub-leasing and/or re-renting.

That appears to be your only ‘positive’ option.. on the good side, you may be able to rent it out for more then you are paying.. (the American way).. that may pay for the headache and the responsibility.

(because YOU will be responsible for whatever THEY do…)

    good luck..

The lease ‘started’ the moment you signed the lease. That your move-in date is not until August is irrelevant to the contract which you signed. They are correct in offering you that option, and that option only.
