Once My Apartment Lease Is Up Do I Have To Renew Or Can I Just Pay Month To Month?

I stay in an apartment in MS. My lease is going to be up next month. I don’t want to renew my lease because I may move in about 3 more months. Do I have to renew my lease to continue to stay in my apartment or can I just pay from month to month? Also since I signed my lease the rent at my apartments went up. Will I now have to pay the new higher rent payment?

    Read your lease

  2. Trouble says:

If the landlord requires a new fixed term lease, you will either have to sign it or move out.
The landlord may allow you to stay on as a month to month tenant.
The landlord can raise the rent effective the day your lease is up with proper written notice. Your rent can be raised whether you stay on with a fixed term lease or as a month to month tenant.

  3. Classy Granny says:

That depends on the landlord. He can insist that you sign a new lease. Your rent should not have gone up during the term of the lease. He can only raise rent at the end of the term. Talk with him. Let him know you might be relocating. He may let you stay on a month to month and if he doesn’t you’ll be moving sooner than you planned.

That will depend on the landlord. You may get a better deal to sign a longer lease. Talk to your landlord about deals.
